The site of Darwell Furnace, near Mountfield, together with a farm and several cottages, was inundated when Darwell Reservoir was constructed between 1937 and 1949. John Manwaring Baines, then curator of Hastings Museum, took the opportunity, before work was completed, to record the site. His account can be read in Wealden Iron, 1st series, 17.
